Family Instilled the Importance of Leadership

Real lifetime experiences have shaped Mr. Spiering. It has enabled him to have a unique and practical understanding of the importance of the quality of life and has proven invaluable in dealing with personal injuries, wrongful death and other catastrophic injury matters. 

Mr. Spiering is the middle son of three sons. His older brother, 10 years older, his younger brother 6 years younger. His parents exposed him to a lifestyle that led him to want to make a difference and make them proud of him. They taught him the importance of life and the value of hard work. His father had been shaped by his management position with Metropolitan Life, and his mother was driven to shape her sons’ lives by exposing them to the best academic opportunities, the arts, music and all types of sports, from baseball to tennis. Mr. Spiering’s parents instilled in him an appreciation for the value of family, life and how delicate a line we all walk. Additionally, the importance of physical health and competing as a member of a team was instilled in Mr. Spiering and his older and younger brothers throughout their lives by their mother and father.

When his father retired to the Carmel area, Mr. Spiering immediately fell in love with the Central Coast, and has lived here ever since. Mr. Spiering was born in San Francisco, California and spent his early youth in Sacramento and Hayward. Mr. Spiering graduated from University of Oregon where he graduated with honors, and obtained his law degree at the University of San Francisco. It was during law school where he began to understand his calling was going to be in the courtroom representing the interests of others, and in particular, fighting for those who do not have a voice.

Making a Difference Professionally

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Spiering has honed his skill in the courtroom and established himself as one of the premier trial attorneys in California. He has tried over a hundred civil cases throughout the state of California. In his early legal career, he handled criminal matters, which threw him into the trial arena quickly. He has represented hundreds of families and individuals who have suffered the worst possible losses; that is, the loss of a family member or a catastrophic injury that impacted every aspect of that person's quality of life. He has obtained multi-million dollar settlements and judgments in personal injury actions, wrongful death actions and catastrophic injuries cases. In addition to these results, Mr. Spiering has settled thousands of cases for clients from every walk of life.

These actions have spanned a wide variety of fact patterns from trucking collisions and motorcycle incidents, to actions involving fraud in the worker’s compensation system and business fires. He has sued businesses for creating dangerous conditions. These verdicts have not only made a significant positive difference for the families he has represented, but also established standards of conduct that have taught corporations and individuals how they must act and conduct themselves.

Mr. Spiering raised two daughters here on the Monterey Peninsula. Based on the values instilled in him at a young age, the values he has instilled in his daughters and now granddaughter, Mr. Spiering’s roots are deep on the Central Coast and he considers it a privilege and honor to represent all types of injured victims in Monterey and neighboring counties.

From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Spiering was an instructor at the Monterey College of Law. He taught Equity to many students, who today are practicing in Monterey County and throughout the Central Coast.

In November of 2006, Mr. Spiering was bestowed the honor of being admitted and qualified as an Attorney of the Supreme Court of the United States of America. This honor allows him to argue before the United States Supreme Court, an honor that not all attorneys receive.  

Mr. Spiering has an AV peer review rating, which means his peers have given him the absolute best rating that is possible. Mr. Spiering is also in the top 5% of American Professionals and holds the position of one of the 10 best Attorneys in California with exceptional and outstanding client services from the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys. He is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, as well as the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

Mr. Spiering also recognizes the importance of serving his community. The community service Mr. Spiering performs, along with the representation of his clients, is all part of the life lessons passed on to him by his parents. The concept that people have to give back to their community, and when they work, they need to work hard and honestly such that the fruits of their labor benefit all involved, is a principle he practices on a daily basis and teaches to those that work with him shoulder to shoulder on behalf of his clients.

Mr. Spiering continues to volunteer with Monterey County Superior Court as a discovery referee.

In January of 2019, Mr. Spiering opened the law firm of Spiering Law, which specializes in handling only personal injury cases. By concentrating only on personal injury actions of all kinds, Mr. Spiering has created a very unique and specialized firm in Monterey County, where he will continue to serve the people of the Central Coast for many years to come.
